Les Misérables - A film you must definitely watch!

If you love drama, like I do, and are planning to go to the movies during the coming weeks, here is something interesting to watch and enjoy: Les Misérables! It is a musical drama film directed by Tom Hooper. The music is composed by Claude-Michel Schönberg and the cast includes star actors like Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and  Anne Hathaway. The film is based on the well known French novel by Victor Hugo. It is the story of Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), a prisoner released on parole from a French prison. He breaks his parole and tries to start a new life, while running away from inspector Javert (Russell Crowe). He shows his altruism when he takes care of Fantine (Anne Hathaway) and Cosette, her daughter. The final part of the story takes place during the June Rebellion, with young schoolboys fighting against slavery. I think the plot is truly emotional as the characters express their strong feelings with their songs, which, by the way, were recorded live, on stage. The music really reaches your soul . You live every moment and feel the drama of every scene. No wander the film was one of the box office hits of 2012, with total earnings reaching $429 million.

  1. Hello Ivi,
Les Miserables seems a very interesting and unique film and i am really curious to see it!
However, i want to ask you, why Jean Valjean was in the prison? He made a serious crime? Why did he want to run away to start a new life? He has a specific purpose? The schoolboys survived?

    Best wishes,
    Ioanna Michaelidou

    1. Hi Ioanna,

First of all, thank you for asking.
Jean Valjean was in the prison because he stole a loaf of bread for his sister's son. He was in prison for 19 years. Can you imagine how strict was the society in 19th century?

After he released on parol from prison, he faced the aversion of the people. He couldn't find a job and not even go anywhere. People where afraid of ex-prisoners.That's why he wanted to start a new life.He changed his name and he became a mayor!

At the end of the rebellion, the schoolboys were alone, without guns or protection, against the army. Most of them died. They sacrificed themselves for those bigger ideas.

      Thank you,
      Ivi Stavrinidou !
