My favorite movie: Sling Blade

The tale of Karl Childers, a mildly retarded man faced with a complex moral dilemma. As a child, Karl was severely abused by his fanatically religious parents, who considered him a punishment from God. When he found his mother sexually entangled with the town bully, Karl believed their actions were wrong--and killed them, swiftly and brutally, with a sling blade. Now, against his will, Karl has been released from an asylum to return to society after twenty-five years. A gifted mechanic, Karl finds work in his small Southern hometown, where he meets young Frank Wheatley. Frank is the first person ever to accept him without fear or judgment; the two become instant friends, and Frank convinces his mother Linda to let Karl live with them. But there's trouble in the Wheatley home: Linda's abusive, narrow-minded boyfriend. Groping to reconcile his own simple moral code with everything he has been taught about right and wrong, Karl must decide whether to stand by and watch, or step in to protect Frank. If you will watch the movie you will find what he done. I recommend to everyone this movie because I think shows us the true love and the true humans.

  1. Hello Alexandros,

Your review was truly informative, and fairly persuasive. You've nicely delivered a plot of an unusual film."Unusual" because unfortunately, they're typically producing action films of insubstantial content.

So, I was wondering, and thinking about Karl's morality. As you've said"As a child, Karl was severely abused by his fanatically religious parents" That means, that he has been significantly, and badly affected by the nurture of his irresponsible parents, but he was still a fine person.Karl, never harmed someone for no serious reason. My questions are:

    1) What do you think was the source of Karl's
    morality?
    2) Do you believe, that Karl's mental condition has determined his moral values?

I look forward to your response.

    Best,
    Albert V.

  2. I think that people who are harmed from their parents behavior, they more likely turn to fine person but with many psychological problems. They don't want to do things that harmed others but when they see it on others ,and especially on their friends, they act more pure and kill them or something like that. In addition to this if someone hurts us, the first thing that come in our mind is to hurt him back. Karl's purity lead him to make this actions..
